January 2019 Projects

This month I have been mostly working on my other project. I have also been working at my job and researching button bouquets for a friend who wants something more unusual for her wedding. I have managed to do a bit of making though.

I need a few more things for work, at least one of the tops I made last year is too big for me now so I need to make a effort to fit more sewing in. I decided to use a pattern I had already drawn so I could just cut out and put together without loads of fittings. I got out a piece of black cotton I had bought in Loros for £2, it was just big enough. As I thought it went together easily but I had to redo where the front panel meets the yoke as it didn't hang well, unpicking black thread on black fabric it not easy.

  • Black top back

This month me and mum went to the sale at the local furnishing fabric shop. I bought a mixed bag that turned out to be a bit disappointing, a lovely piece of embroidered geometric fabric that will make a great accent to something. I also picked up some embroidered sheer fabric that I thought would be perfect for an occasion dress.

I was thinking about the occasion dress, I wanted to have a contrast fabric underneath that would show being longer than the sheer layer. I rummaged through my fabrics and got out the purple I picked up in a charity shop last year, it's a 4 meters long, so plenty to play with and only cost £3. I looked through my patterns and looked online and wasn't really inspired by anything, nothing matched what I have in my head. I had it in the back of my mind for ages until I realised the pattern I had altered for the green Christmas top would actually be perfect for the under-dress. I had a look at the pattern and as the skirt front and back are just single pieces I knew I would have to redraw the skirt to give it more flare. I wanted something about knee length with enough fabric in the skirt to swish nicely. I knew that the bodice section fits well so I took the lower front and back pieces that I had drawn and decided to made them each into 2 sections, which would make a 6 panelled skirt. I started on the front panel, I traced one side onto tracing paper using the dart as my stopping point, I traced down one side of the dart and drew a straight line down from its point. I added 9 inches to the bottom for the length and added 2 inches to each side at the hem end and tapered back. I did the same with the other side of the front but as that was to be cut on the fold I left the fold side straight. I did the same with the back panel and now have a pattern that I think will work well. I had wanted to make the dress last weekend but I realised I hadn't washed the fabric so I did that and ran out of time

  • Occasion dress fabrics
  • Original front dress panel
  • Redrawn front panel pieces.

Hopefully in February I will at least make the under-dress and settle on a pattern for the sheer one. I really need to get on with my other project though, I am no where near as far on as I need to be with that. I also want to make a long sleeved top, possibly with some lovely patterned jersey I got online.
